KGALAGADI TRANSFRONTIER PARK KALAHARI SAFARI

Safari – Day 1
Upington –Augrabies Falls National Park

We depart in the morning at 7H30 from your guesthouse to the 6th highest waterfall in the world. On the way to Keimoes we stop at a local wine farm to do wine tasting.

At Keimoes we drive up the Tierberg for a panoramic view of the lush Orange River Valley and stop at a dried fruit stall to sample the local products.

On arrival at “Akoerabis” – Place of the big noise- we take a walk to see the Orange River (7th longest in Africa) plunging 67 meters into a 17km long ravine.

After a short rest we depart on a game drive to view the Giraffe, Dassie, Klipspringer, Chacma Baboons, Vervet Monkeys and the prolific bird - life (264 species) found here.

Later afternoon you can join the Night Game Drive (optional) to learn more about the stars of the Southern Hemisphere.

Overnight: Augrabies – Chalets

Safari – Day 2
Augrabies – Molopo Lodge / Kalahari Trails Nature Reserve

We start early to do the “Dassie Nature Trail” through the incredible rock formations and water streams. Optional River Rafting (half day)

After this we visit the Ravine, with the fascinating viewpoints like Ararat, Echo corner and we’ll take a walk up the “Moon Rock”

We depart to Molopo Lodge or Kalahari Trails Nature Reserve (depending on availability). On the way we stop en route at the Norokei Salt Pans ( natural salt mine) and we pay a visit to the Khomani san Bushmen to view their art.

Safari – Day 3
Kalahari Trails Nature Reserve / Molopo Lodge – Mata Mata

At Kalahari Trails Nature Reserve you can go on a night- or day game walk in the open Kalahari with Prof. Anne Rasa, a local inhabitant that has lived for many years in the harsh Kalahari Desert.
She will share with us her incredible knowledge of the Kalahari - the fascinating animals, plants and insects that live here.

After the morning walk we depart to Mata Mata in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
Lunch will be enjoyed at an unfenced picnic spot. A museum that shows us how the pioneers of the old days lived is well worth a visit.
We than depart on a game drive in this 38000 square park. Approximate predator numbers: Lions- 450, Leopards – 150, Cheetah – 200, Spotted hyena – 370.

Bird Species are 264, of which 20-raptor species present. Antelopes such as Gemsbok, Hartebees, Springbok and Wildebeest are well represented.

At Mata Mata there is a waterhole which you can visit and watch the animals come to drink. By walking around in this small camp we will meet the locals: ground squirrels, mongooses, jackals, as well as birds like the crimson breasted shrikes, hornbills, weavers and fork-tailed drongo’s. We might be lucky and see the local pride of lions or hyenas coming to visit the waterhole just a few meters away…

Safari - Day 4
Mata Mata

We get up early in the morning, have some breakfast, and go on a game ride to see what the wild life bring for us today.

You can see in the sand roads of the Kalahari by looking at the animal tracks what happened during the night.

The animals are active early in the morning and late afternoon.

Safari - Day 5
Mata Mata – Upington

We depart early morning back along the Auob river on a game drive towards Twee Rivieren. The Kamqua Dune Road leads us through 3 countries in one hour. The most beautiful red Kalahari dunes can be found here. We explore the wonders of the Kalahari until 12h00, before we take the scenic road back to Upington.
